This was the stage everyone had been waiting for. The teams would be up and down mountains culminating in the agonizing and windy climb up to the rarified air of a barren Mont Ventoux. After a rest day Stage 14 was another typical “flat” stage. But this race would have a heartbreaking twist. As expected a breakaway escaped. 12 riders strong it included George Hincapie.
